Three Rivers Birding Club

Buffalo Creek IBA

The formal dedication of the Buffalo Creek IBA is Friday October 10 at 10:30 am. It will held at the Sawhill Covered Bridge on SR-221, north of Taylorstown, in Washington County.

This event highlights efforts to protect critical habitat for birds. As many members and birders as possible should be there to represent the birding and conservation community!

The Buffalo Creek IBA is the 80th one in Pennsylvania. The Audubon IBA Program identified the site for its large heron rookery (51 active Great Blue Heron nests), streamside forest habitat, and high water quality, which are a magnet for many rare and declining neotropical migrant birds. These include the declining Cerulean Warbler (proposed as a federal threatened species), the Acadian Flycatcher, the Louisiana Waterthrush, and many others. The event focuses on the significance of IBA designation, current and planned conservation activities (especially protection of the stream and its associated forest habitat), and local pportunities for eco-tourism development. The dramatic release of a rehabilitated Great Horned Owl will be featured.

The 3 Rivers Birding Club has adopted this IBA, committing to see that the point counts are done. Jack Solomon will speak at the dedication, and we know we don't want to miss that!
