Neil Nodelman has accepted the position as our new 3RBC Program Director.  We want to thank Wendy Jo Shemansky for all the work that she has done for 3RBC since our inception.  Neil will be responsible for lining up our speakers and related details.  Welcome Neil!

Message from Scott Shalaway to Jack Solomon dated November 1st:

Jack,
Good news. I talked several times last week with Maddy Ross, PG ME, and they are going to resume my column on Nov 14 on the outdoors page. Letters and phone calls like yours and every one else who responded paid off. Thanks.

As an expression of gratitude I'd like to offer a free program to the 3RBC. I have several, but one I'd suggest for beginners is entitled, How to Identify Unfamiliar Birds. It would be perfect for a meeting where you are actively inviting beginners and new members. And I'd promote it often on the radio. Let me know if you have any interest. And agian, thanks for your voice.

Scott's program would be eagerly accepted per Jack Solomon.

Don Heintzelman book, Guide to Hawk Watching in North America has been revised and updated and is now back in print and available as a Falcon Guide. The ISBN is 0-7627-2670-9. It is available from the publisher at http://www.GlobePequot.com, book sellers in Canada and the USA, and on-line book sellers.

This is the first update and revision of this book since it was published originally in 1979 by Penn State University Press.

The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania is looking for a volunteer to operate the Western PA Bird Hotline, which receives reports of rarities in the region, makes them available to other birders, and provides a variety of other information. For details about the tasks involved, contact Jack Solomon.

Steve Hoffman, who has coordinated Pennsylvania Audubon's IBA efforts is moving to a new job out west. We wish him well and look forward to working with his replacement.

The 3 bird-related books that were given away as door prizes at 3RBC's March meeting and the brand new one awarded at the April meeting, were donated by the Schenley Park Visitors Center, where nature books, light meals and other refreshments are available.

The Shenango Reservoir shorebird project's planning phase may go a bit further, but things are likely to soon come to at least a pause, if not a halt. The problem is that the Corps of Engineers is foreseeing a shortfall in funding.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette has dropped Scott Shalaway's Sunday column, apparently without any mention. They have dropped several freelance writers, giving budgetary problems as a reason.  Scott is the only regularly appearing natural history writer they run, and he's excellent at what he does. The paper has previously returned features when they got a complaint level greater than they expected. Let's give them our take on this and get him back. Call the Post Gazette today and let them know this is a big mistake.
