One Good Tern Is Worth Two on the Beach:
Birds of the American Southeast
April 26, 2004
The battle to end the slaughter of wading birds that breed in the subtropical swamps in the southeastern United States was a milestone in the conservation movement. Naturalist, writer, and photographer Chuck Tague will show us many of those species at our meeting on Monday, April 26, at the Phipps Garden Center in Shadyside. Doors will open at 7 PM for socializing, and the meeting will begin at 7:30.
Chuck, well known to most of our members for his publication Nature Observer News, will use pictures, stories, and shameless puns to show the life and habitat of the birds that breed or winter from the South Carolina Low Country to the Florida Keys. He will feature pelicans, Anhingas, rails, cranes, shorebirds, terns, raptors, Florida Scrub-Jays, plus herons and egrets with feathers that were once worth more than gold.
The Garden Center is at 1059 Shady Avenue behind the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts at Fifth and Shady Avenues. Parking is 25 cents an hour in a metered lot, and more parking is available on Shady Avenue. In addition, Beechwood Boulevard, a block east of Shady, has free parking and is a short walk through Mellon Park to the Garden Center. Detailed directions are on the Phipps website: http://www.phipps.conservatory.org/information/directions.html.
