Pennsylvania Migration Count Results
(Carol & Fred McCullough)
Thanks to all who participated in the 2005 migration count. Despite the rain, we were able to find 138 species. And to illustrate how important each individual’s effort is, 25 species were located by only one party. Mike Fialkovich searched the county’s western grasslands and recorded 9 species not seen elsewhere. Paul Hess scoured the northern area and reported 4 species found nowhere else. Renee Slis searched areas along the county’s southern edge finding 3 species no other party located. And in the center of the county within city limits Mary Assenat, Dan Yagusic, the Solomons and the McCulloughs accounted for 6 more species unique to the count.
The highlight of the count was the great variety of species in such an urban setting as Allegheny County:
9 species of birds of prey
5 species of woodpecker
9 species of flycatcher (including Alder and Olive-sided)
6 species of vireo
28 species of warblers (including a Brewster’s)
These plus the grassland sparrows, Bobolink, Meadowlark and Woodcock illustrate how rich and varied is the habitat surrounding us.
It was great working with all of you; we appreciate your time and efforts.
