Birdwatch/Nature Cruise on the Three Rivers of Pittsburgh
April 16, 2005
Have you ever wondered what birds might
live on our lovely three rivers of Pittsburgh? Would you like to travel on the Mon, the Allegheny,
and Ohio Rivers in style via a retired Navy Boat that has been converted to a floating classroom? We
will be leaving from the Carnegie Science Center Parking lot near the back at the Voyager Dock.
School groups travel from all over Pennsylvania to learn about the life of our three rivers to see birds,
macroinvertebrates, microscopic plants and animals through Pittsburgh Voyager each year. Here's your
opportunity...
On Saturday, April 16th from 9:00AM - 12:00PM, Lisa Meadows will be hosting the a birdwatching/nature cruise
via Pittsburgh Voyager's Discovery. The trip will last approximately 3 hours and include some of the best
bird watching seen our three rivers.
Springtime is the best time of year to see of our native and migratory birds, including Double-crested
Cormorants, Hooded Mergansers, Bufflehead ducks, raptors, Great Blue Herons, geese, etc. Those of you who
aren't avid birdwatchers may also enjoy learning about some of the other creatures who live in our three
rivers, including plankton (microscopic life), macroinvertebrates (insects, clams, and other small
creatures) or enjoy the beautiful scenery. This trip will offer some amazing picture taking opportunities
for the photographers of your family.
This cruise is geared for adults though older children (10+) may enjoy it as well. This trip will have a
very laid-back format where novice and expert bird watchers can interact with staff, move around the boat,
or simply relax and enjoy the scenery. This trip would not be appropriate for young children or for
people who need a great deal of structure.
The cost per person is $20, which benefits the Leukemia Lymphoma
Society for Team in Training. Your host,
Lisa Meadows, is an experienced naturalist who has worked and volunteered with environmental
organizations, such as Pittsburgh Voyager, Cape Outdoor Discovery, and the National Aviary. Other
staff includes, Laura Haller, a local expert in bird watching community, who has worked for the
National Park Service, Pittsburgh Zoo, and Pittsburgh Voyager. Our boat crew and Captain Sue Cralle
have extensive knowledge of three rivers that is sure to fascinate you.
