Deer Management Seminars
Note
from Jack Solomon: Gary Alt's efforts to reform the Pennsylvania Game
Commission's attitude toward deer overpopulation was recently featured in Audubon Magazine, in a
Ted Williams article. He is now touring Pennsylvania, with his message.
The excessive deer herd is regarded by many as having profoundly adverse affects on birds, as well
as a host of other life forms.
Dr. Gary Alt, former Supervisor of the Pennsylvania
Game Commission Deer Management Section, will speak on The Challenges and Solutions of Managing Deer In
Pennsylvania at a series of one day workshops to be conducted around the state. The workshops are
sponsored by over 30 organizations representing agricultural, forestry, environmental, landowner,
hunting and community interests. The seminars are designed to continue the process of educating the
public about the need for a science-based, habitat focused approach to deer management. Other
speakers will include representatives of statewide, as well as, local sponsoring organizations in each
region.
Each half-day seminar has been scheduled for a Saturday morning to facilitate attendance by the
general public. Afternoon field trips, sponsored by local organizations, will focus on local impacts
of overabundant deer and programs designed to address them. There is no fee for attending the
workshop or field trips and no pre-registration is required.
Additional information on the workshops can be obtained by contacting The Ecosystem Management
