One of the defining features of the Pennsylvania topography is the huge chain of folded mountains running across the center of the state, the Appalachians. These mountains have a major affect on the winds coming across the state from west to east. Those two facts make Pennsylvania “Hawk Heaven.” The hawks of eastern North America love those updrafts. . .and so do glider pilots. The 15-time National Soaring Champion, Karl Striedick of State College, PA has put his love of gliding and of hawks together in an exciting program of slides and stories. Karl has developed a personal style of high-excitement soaring just a few feet above the ridge tops which takes unbelievably sharp eye-hand coordination and an error-free knowledge of the topography. Karl first burst on the national scene when he did a trip from State College to Oak Ridge TN. . . and BACK in one day! This is great stuff! Karl's a 40-year Sierra Club member too, by the way!
Kids and families are welcome. Light refreshments after the meeting.
