Year-End Bluebird Nesting Box Report
Dear Friends,
As you may recall 38 nesting boxes were installed this spring at Harrison Hills Park. Twentysix were built and installed by Scout Troop No. 186 and twelve were built by Hubert Kamer and installed by Patrick Kopnicky.
Here are the results of our work and the birds who use them.
-
15 Bluebird nestings
11 Wren nestings
4 Tree Swallow nestings
14 Boxes remained empty
3 were damaged by maintenance equipment
The good news is that a conservative estimate is that as many as 60 new bluebirds have been added to the population of our Park. We are very lucky I'm told to have had such success in attracting Bluebirds so quickly. This means that next year many of these offspring will return and look for a nesting box to start their new families.
If we are to really take advantage of these nesting boxes we need to form a committee to monitor these boxes during breeding season to clean out old nests, protect boxes from Wrens and Sparrows and report on how many eggs are laid, hatched and young that successfully fly away. If you are interested, please contact me. Now is the time to plan for next Spring.
Thanks to all of the scout volunteers and Mr. Kamer for their efforts without whom this project would not have happened.
