Pennsylvania Migration Count Results
Allegheny County, May 12, 2007

As if to make up for the lackluster migration flight on count day in 2006, the 2007 count was above average. May 12th favored birders with excellent weather as well as birds. The 72 observers recorded 134 species (3 above the average for the years 1995-2006) including 32 warbler species (5 above the average).

The county was well canvassed: Sewickley (S. Mutz), North Park (the Lynchs), Beechwood (D. Liebmann), Harrison Hills (P. Hess), Boyce Park (J. Walko), South Hills (groups led by G. Bercik, N. Page, J. Phillips, S. Sinderson ), western areas (M. Fialkovich, J. Valimont, S. Kinsey), and within and near the city (the Solomons, the McCulloughs, the Boreks, D. Yagusic).

The densest warbler concentration was in Settlers Cabin County Park where 22 species including the count’s only Cape May and Swainson’s warblers were found. And most of the grassland birds as well as a common moorhen were located near Imperial. Other rare or unusual observations were yellow-bellied sapsucker at Peter’s Creek, purple martins and a Philadelphia vireo at Harrison Hills, orange-crowned warbler and northern waterthrush in East Liberty, palm warbler at Frick Park and worm-eating warblers at Peter’s Creek and Riverview Park.

To illustrate the importance of each participant: 25 species (19% of the total number of species) including 6 warbler species were observed by only one party.

Our thanks to each participant who helped make this an above average migration count.
