Why Are Golden-winged Warblers Disappearing?
The Golden-winged Warbler, formerly a common breeder in southwestern Pennsylvania, has become a species that local birders seldom see today. We will learn why it is disappearing from our region at the Three Rivers Birding Club meeting on Wednesday, October 6. This is the program that had to be postponed last December.
Our speaker will be Dr. Jeffery Larkin, Associate Professor of Conservation Biology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Besides discussing conservation efforts in behalf of this declining species, he will share his research findings about Golden-winged Warbler breeding ecology in north-central Pennsylvania.
Dr. Larkin, a faculty member at IUP since 2005, received his B.A. degree from Ithaca College and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Kentucky. His research interests include songbird ecology, habitat management and restoration, population biology, and impacts of human disturbances on biodiversity.
The meeting will be held at the Phipps Garden Center, 1059 Shady Avenue in Shadyside. Doors will open at 6:30 PM for scocializing, the business meeting begins at 7:30, and the program starts at 8.
At membership meetings, bring in old bird-related magazines books, etc. that are no longer wanted, and set them on a table for anyone to take, free. If the materials are not taken, please take them home.
