(Non-3RBC) Sunday, December 1 — Green Lane and vicinity

    Lehigh Valley Audubon Society
    Peter Saenger (610-682-2401) will lead this trip to a well known spot for various waterfowl and gulls. Meet at 9:00 a.m. in the Kmart parking lot on Tilghman St., just west of Rt. 309 (SW corner, near the Dunkin Donuts). Please try to arrive 10-15 minutes before departure time for the trip.

Monday, December 2 — Pymatuning Area

    Scott Kinzey will lead this weekday outing to the Pymatuning area. Meet Scott at 1:00PM at the Spillway parking lot. The Spillway is on State Road 3011, 1.5 miles south of Linesville. In Linesville, there are signs for the Spillway at the correct intersection. Depending on the weather, plenty of waterfowl and other winter specialties should be around for this trip. Bald Eagles are almost guaranteed. Rough-legged Hawks are possible, along with the famous albino Red-tailed Hawk that has been there for several years now. Other possibilities include Snow Buntings and Horned Larks.

    Meet at 8:00 a.m. in the Barnegat Light State Park parking lot at north end of Long Beach Island.
    This is an extended trip; the leaders will stop for dinner on the way home. Car-pooling from First Union Bank, Painters Crossing, PA, NW corner US Rtes. 1 and 202 at 6:00 a.m.

    Meet at 9 AM in the parking lot at the base of the dam. We will be looking for wintering gulls and eagles. Dress warmly and bring a scope if you have one. PLEASE NOTE: due to new security conditions, please check Cliff the week of the trip to make sure there have been no changes.

Sunday, December 8 — Lake Arthur

    Jim Valimont will lead this final outing of the year to this excellent waterfowl migration location. Last year on this outing, it was so warm that we saw butterflies! We had excellent looks at Common Loons, Tundra Swans, a blue phase Snow Goose, and an immature Bald Eagle among the 47 species. Meet at 8:00 AM in the day use area (south shore) in the first parking lot.

    The trees, meadows, vegetation and ponds make this 162-acre preserve an ideal habitat for birds. Meet at 8:30 AM at the barn on the preserve (not by the residence, which is private). Directions: From PA Tpk. Exit 23, north on Route 100 for 6 miles. Left on Prizer Road for 0.8 mile. Or, from intersection of Routes 100 & 23 in Bucktown, south on Route 100 for 1.1 miles, right on Prizer Road for 0.8 mile.

    Bring your favorite cookies to share for our annual Christmas Party. Bring your own place setting, mug and a covered dish dessert to share.

    Meet at 7:00 P.M for Covered Dish Desserts, with a meeting and program at 7:30, at the Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, 7501 Church Avenue, Ben Avon, PA 15202. Directions from Pittsburgh: take Ohio River Boulevard (Route 65) into Ben Avon. After crossing the bridge into Ben Avon, turn Right onto Dickson. At the second STOP sign turn Left onto Church Street. After the third STOP sign look for a large stone church on the left. Turn left onto Rostrevor. Parking lot is on the left of Rostrevor Place. Bring your own place setting, mug and a covered dish dessert to share.

Saturday, December 28 — Pittsburgh Christmas Bird Count

    The Pittsburgh CBC has been conducted for decades, and with continued participation, it will continue for many more. Everyone is invited to attend the annual count dinner and tally meeting on Sunday, December 29. Dinner starts at 6:00 PM at Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve in Fox Chapel. Bring a covered dish or salad or dessert that serves 10, or give a donation to help cover the cost of the dinner. Immediately after dinner and dessert, the area leaders will present their results.

    A leader for Hampton Township is still needed at this point. If you are interested in providing the leadership and organization, please call Jim Valimont at 412-828-5338.
