September 2003 Outings

Saturday, September 6 — Frick Park

Mike Fialkovich (412-731-3581) will lead this outing in search of resident and migrating birds.  Meet at the Frick Environmental Center parking lot off Beechwood Boulevard at 7:30 AM for this outing.  Although spring is the best time to view migrating warblers, the fall migration presents special identification challenges for new and experienced birders alike.  Let Mike help you work through those challenges on this outing.

Sunday, September 7 — Harrison Hills County Park

Meet leader Jim Valimont (412-828-5338) at this county park off Natrona Heights and Freeport.  As you enter the park, bear left and meet in the first parking lot on the left at 8:15 AM for this morning walk in search of migrants.  Dress for wet grass and mud.  Previous fall outings have produced a nice variety of warblers (including Cape May and Wilson's), Philadelphia and Yellow-throated Vireos, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and Scarlet Tanagers.

Monday, September 8 — Horigan Property, Buffalo Township

Brian Shema (412-963-6100) will guide us to this wonderful addition to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania's sanctuaries.  This will be our first chance to explore this property.  Take Rt. 28N to Exit 17 (Butler/Freeport), Rt 356.  Turn right at the end of the ramp onto Rt. 356 N. Just after crossing Rt. 28, meet in the Park and Ride lot on the left at 8:00 AM.  Depending on the number of cars, we will carpool from here to the limited parking area on

Saturday, September 20 — Madjaric Farm/Butler County

Pat and Sherron Lynch (724-935-3178) will lead this outing to Bob and Berniece Madjaric's 72 acres of varied habitat in southern Butler County that they are willing to share with the Three Rivers Birding Club.  Several of our members have already explored this area and have noted its potential for future outings.  This will be our inaugural outing to their land during a migration.  To reach the Madjaric property, take I-79 North to the Portersville/Prospect exit (Exit 96).  Turn right onto Rt. 488, go about one mile, and then bear right dress>Kern Road.  (Don’t make the 90 degree turn.)  On Kern Road, go about 0.5 mile to a group of mailboxes.  Turn right dress>Thunder Mountain Road.  The Madjarics live at the end of Thunder Mountain Road.  Please drive slowly on the gravel roads.  Meet at the Madjaric house at 8:00 AM.  Bring a lunch and be prepared for muddy trails.

Sunday, September 21 — Buffalo Creek Valley (Washington County)

Larry Helgerman (412-531-9273) will lead this fall outing to this new IBA site.  On our inaugural outing to this area this spring, we found an impressive 70 species in late April.  From Pittsburgh, take I-79 south to I-70.  Take I-70 west to the Taylorstown exit.  At the stop sign, take a left.  At the next stop sign, take a right.  After about one mile, you will come to a blinking red light.  Proceed straight through this light and meet Jim in the parking area about 200 yards on the left.  In case you get lost, ask for directions to the S-bridge, which is a well-known local landmark at this intersection.  Meet at 8:00 AM.  Be prepared for muddy trails and pack a lunch to stay into the afternoon.

Saturday, September 27 — Sewickley Heights Park/Independence Marsh

Chris Knoll (412-741-0203) will be our guide to this park in western Allegheny County.  From I-79, take the Mt. Nebo exit and head west toward Sewickley.  After about two miles, you will come to a stop sign.  Turn right Fern Hollow Road (Orange Belt).  After about one mile, turn right into Sewickley Heights Park.  Drive to the end of the road to the parking lot.  Meet at 7:30 AM, bring a lunch, and be prepared for muddy trails.  Chris will guide us through the park, then on to Independence Marsh and possibly to Imperial.

For people that want to attend a slide show or help in tagging, a small donation will be required to offset the cost of materials.  This is an excellent opportunity for adults and children  to learn about the Monarch butterfly and do hands-on field work.
