November 2004 Outings

Wednesday, November 3 — Lake Arthur

    This will be a leaderless outing, starting at 8 AM in the first parking lot on the right in the Day Use Area (South Shore). See October 24 for directions.

Saturday, November 6 — Yellow Creek State Park

    This will be a joint outing with the Todd Bird Club. Meet Margaret Higbee (724-354-3493) at the park office at 8 AM. The office is on Route 259 just off Route 422 east of Indiana. Allow an hour and 15 minutes to drive from Pittsburgh. The park contains a wide variety of habitats and a large lake that attracts a wide variety of species. Some of the waterfowl numbers have been spectacular in the past, and rarities have shown up fairly regularly.

Sunday, November 14 — Lake Arthur

    Jack and Sue Solomon (412-521-3365) will be our leaders. Meet this time at 8:30 AM in the first parking lot on the right in the Day Use Area (South Shore). See October 24 for directions. After the morning outing, we will probably go to Eppinger’s Restaurant for buckwheat pancakes, and possibly we will continue birding in the afternoon.

Sunday, November 21 — Pymatuning Area

    Meet leader Mike Fialkovich (412-731-3581) at the Pymatuning Wildlife Learning Center (Waterfowl Museum) at 9 AM for this all-day trip. Plenty of waterfowl, lots of Bald Eagles, late migrant songbirds, and winter species should be around for this trip. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring a lunch or join us as we stop for lunch at a local restaurant. Those who wish can carpool at 7:30 AM at the park-and-ride lot at the intersection of Routes 19 and 228 (across from Denny's) in Cranberry Township. Enter the lot from the service road accessible from the Burger King on Route 19.

Sunday, November 28 — Lower Buffalo Creek Watershed (Washington County)

    Larry Helgerman (412-531-9273) will lead another outing to this IBA site. Meet at the S-Bridge at 8:30 AM. Directions to S-Bridge: I-70 to Taylorstown exit, Follow signs for SR-221 north, meet in parking lot just past blinking light.  Questions, e-mail ChristyBe prepared for muddy trails and pack a lunch to stay into the afternoon.
