June 2005 Outings

Saturday, June 4 — Pymatuning/Conneaut Area

Chuck Tague (412-488-8760) will lead this search for breeding marsh birds and migrating shorebirds. Target species include Common Moorhen, Virginia Rail, Sora, Marsh Wren, Bald Eagle, Black Tern, Prothonotary Warbler, and perhaps bitterns. Meet at the Linesville Wildlife Learning Center, formerly the Waterfowl Museum at 8 AM. Bring lunch.

Saturday, June 11  — Ohiopyle State Park

Mike Fialkovich (412-731-3581) will lead this outing in search of breeding birds, including Golden-winged, Blue-winged, and Prairie Warblers. Meet at the Dairy Queen restaurant off the Donegal exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike at 7 AM. Bring lunch.

Saturday, June 18 — Presque Isle State Park

For our first outing led by teen-age birders, meet at 9 AM in the first parking lot on the right after entering the park. Bring a teen birder with you to look for breeding birds at one of the state’s great birding hotspots. The park is at the north end of Route 832 (Presque Isle Drive) just west of the city of Erie. The leaders are Dan Williams, who made a name for himself at our 2002 birding festival by answering the toughest bird quiz, and Ross Gallardy, whose team won this year's youth division title in the World Series of Birding.

Wednesday, June 22 — Bavington State Gamelands

Dan Yagusic (412-784-1753) will lead this weekday outing to a prime area of Washington County to find grassland and woodland breeders – perhaps also wetland birds, because the area has a small wetland. Bring a lunch and bird into the afternoon. Meet at 8:30 AM in the gamelands parking lot. From Pittsburgh, take the Parkway West, then Route 22/30 west to the Bavington exit. Turn right at the stop sign, then left at the next stop sign. Follow this road (Steubenville Pike) for about 4 miles. After passing the Knowlton Building on your left, go approximately a half-mile farther and turn left into the gamelands parking lot.

Saturday, June 25 — Clarion County

Mourning Warblers and other woodland breeding birds will be features in the morning half of this all-day outing. After lunch we will head to the local reclaimed strip mine areas to find Clay-colored, Henslow’s, and Grasshopper Sparrows, and we will have possibilities for Upland Sandpipers, Northern Harriers, Bobolinks, and other grassland specialties. Mike Leahy (814-797-2287), who knows just about every corner of the county, will be our leader. Meet at 9 AM at the Country Fair convenience store at the intersection of Route 66 and Route 322 approximately 3 miles north of Exit 60 on I-80 (Shippenville & Cook Forest).

Non-3RBC Outing: Wissahickon Nature Club — Wednesday, June 8 — Butler Freeport Trail

Meet leaders Esther Allen and Chuck Tague at 9:00AM in search for spring wildflowers and birds. This trail is always full of surprises. On a good day, Esther has been known to find 60 flowers blooming along the Butler Freeport Trail.

Directions from Pittsburgh: take Route 28 North to Exit 17 in Freeport. Then, Route 356 North (right) for 3.6 miles. Turn right onto Sarver Road (SR 2018). After 0.7 mile, turn left into the parking lot of the trail, just after the Buffalo Township Fire Hall.

Dress for the weather. Bring binoculars and a lunch. Please call Susanne at (412)771-4737 to let us know you're coming.

Outings are not exclusive to members only. Everybody is more than welcome to come along.
