Three Rivers Birding Club

August 2007 Outings

Wednesday, August 29 — Annual Birds & Beer Outing

Join Jack Solomon (412-521-3365) as we look for Chimney Swifts arriving, en masse, and swirling into a chimney to roost, after sunset.

Arrive at 7:45PM (Sunset is at 7:57) at the Sharp Edge Beer Emporium (412-661-3537) located at 302 South Saint Clair Street, East Liberty, Pittsburgh.

South Saint Clair Street is between Friendship Avenue and Baum Boulevard. You can use http://maps.google.com or any mapping site to find the Sharp Edge if you haven't been there before.

After birding, which is consisting of standing near South Saint Clair & Baum and watching a chimney across South Saint Clair, we go into the Sharp Edge, which has scores of imported beers on tap. They serve snacks and meals, too.

Wednesday August 29 — Bird and Wildflower Outing at Raccoon Creek State Park - Nichol Road 10:00a.m.

Join Esther Allen and Chuck Tague of the Wissahickon Nature Club for a bird and wildflower outing at Raccoon Creek State Park at 10:00 a.m. There should be lots of late summer flowers and many butterflies. The Hackberry Emperor was there last year. Bring binoculars, field guides, water and a lunch. Call Susanne at (412)771-4737 or email natureob@city-net.com so we know you're coming.

Directions: From Pittsburgh take the Parkway West (I-279 south/US 22-30). Exit the Parkway to continue on US 22/30 West. Exit US 22 at Florence, Route 18. Drive north to the town of Frankfort Springs. At the north end of town bear left onto PA Route 168. Drive 3.6 miles to Nichol Road. The trail and parking lot is on the right side of Rt. 168 just past a small church, beyond a green, wooden cactus.
