March 2007 Outings
Sunday, March 18 Allegheny County Rivers
Explore areas along the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers looking for spring migrating waterfowl with Dan Yagusic as our leader. Meet Dan at Lock and Dam No. 2 under the Highland Park Bridge at 8 AM. Entry to the park is at the intersection of Allegheny River Boulevard and Washington Boulevard. After crossing the tracks, bear left and continue to the parking area.
Wednesday, March 21 Woodcock Walk
Meet Tommy Byrnes at the former Ames and Giant Eagle parking lot just off the Harmar exit of Route 28 at 6:30 PM. Meet in front of the old Ames store. We will carpool and drive a short distance to a field in Harmar Township that has produced many American Woodcocks in the past several years. Be prepared for mud and bring a flashlight to witness the strange display of the Timberdoodle. This is the first of three walks Tommy will lead to this location this spring; the others will be on April 11 and May 9.
Saturday, March 24 Pymatuning Area
Meet leader VanNewkirk at the Pymatuning Wildlife Learning Center (Waterfowl Museum) at 9 AM for this all-day outing. Plenty of waterfowl, lots of Bald Eagles, and Rough-legged Hawks are likely. Snow Buntings and Horned Larks are also possible. Take I-79 north to Route 6, and go west to Linesville. Turn left at the light in Linesville where the sign points toward the Pymatuning spillway. The sign for the center will be on the left, past the fish hatchery and before the spillway. Bring lunch or eat at a local restaurant. Dress appropriately for weather that may be colder than in Pittsburgh.
