October 2007 Outings

Sunday October 7 — Moraine State Park

This outing is our annual 3RBC picnic and bird walk. Bob Machesney (412-366-7869) will be our host to lead us to the Moraine State Park fall birding hot spots. This year the picnic is being held early in the month to take advantage of the nice fall weather before the cold settles in. After the morning outing, we will have the picnic lunch at one of the park pavilions near the McDaniel's boat launch. Bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to share with the group. A main course will be provided. Meet in the Moraine State Park day use area (south shore) in the first parking lot on the right at 8:00 AM. From I-79, take route 422 east toward Butler and exit at the Moraine State Park exit. At the end of the ramp, turn left and go straight into the park until you see the first major parking area on your right. Allow one hour driving from Pittsburgh.

Saturday October 27 — Southwestern Veterans Center, Pittsburgh

Dan Yagusic will lead an outing to this small but bird-filled location to search for lingering migrants and resident birds. We will meet there at 8 AM. Contact Dan by phone 412-613-1534 (cell) or 412-665-6773 (work) or e-mail dyagusic@hotmail.com to let him know that you are coming. The center is at 7060 Highland Drive, off Washington Boulevard, in East Liberty. From Washington Boulevard turn east onto Highland Drive (across from the City of Pittsburgh Housing Authority headquarters. Go up the hill, stay left at the "Y", make the first right after the "Y", proceed past the building, and park in the far upper corner of the parking lot near two small outbuildings. The trails are narrow and sometimes a little muddy, so dress appropriately.
