June 2008 Outings

Sunday June 1 - Lower Buffalo Creek Watershed (Washington County)

    Larry Helgerman (412-508-0321 or bobolink1@earthlink.net) and Mary Grey will lead this season's final outing to this area. We will meet at 7:30 AM.

    From Pittsburgh, take I-79 south to I-70. Take I-70 west to the Taylorstown exit. At the stop sign, take a left. At the next stop sign, take a right. After about one mile, you will come to a blinking red light. Proceed straight through this light and meet the leaders in the parking area about 200 yards on the left. In case you get lost, ask for directions to the S-bridge, which is a well-known local landmark at this intersection. Be prepared for muddy trails and pack a lunch to stay into the afternoon.

Saturday June 28 - Boyce Park

    Join Mike Fialkovich (412-731-3581) for this Breeding Bird Atlas survey of Boyce Park. Meet at the Nature Center at 7:30 AM. Directions: From Pittsburgh take I-376 East to Exit 14B Plum. From the exit ramp proceed 0.7 miles. Turn right onto Monroeville-Trestle Road. There is a sign for Boyce Park at this intersection. Travel 0.8 miles. Turn right onto Old Frankstown Road and the Nature Center is 0.2 miles ahead on the left.


Wissahickon Nature Club Summer Outing

    June 27, Friday, 10:00 a.m. Bird and Wildflower Outing at Raccoon Creek State Park - Nichol Road by Esther Allen and Chuck Tague. There will be the first of the summer flowers and many butterflies. Great Spangled Fritillaries should be flying. Bring binoculars, field guides, water and a lunch.     From Pittsburgh take the Parkway West (I-279 south/US 22-30). Exit the Parkway to continue on US 22/30 West. Exit US 22 at Florence, Route 18. Drive north to the town of Frankfort Springs. At the north end of town bear left onto PA Route 168. Drive 3.6 miles to Nichol Road. The trail and parking lot is on the right side of Rt. 168 just past a small church, beyond a green wooden cactus.
